The National Weather Service confirmed an EF-2 Tornado began in Eaton, IN, Delaware County on Sunday, November 5, 2017 at approximately 1:30 PM. The tornado traveled northeast approximately 39 miles through Jay County and into Mercer County, Ohio, ending around 2:30 PM. Many residential and commercial buildings were damaged or destroyed along the path of the tornado.
Although Jay County suffered a major loss to property, no deaths and only minor injuries were reported. The residents, emergency personnel, and volunteers rallied together to begin the clean up and rebuilding for their fellow neighbors and community. Many offered clothing, and necessities while others offered food, and housing for their families, and livestock. The residents of Jay County were shaken from the Tornado and the damage left behind its destruction, but it is clear that Jay County is proud to have residents and surrounding volunteers to step up and lend their time and offerings to help rebuild our community.
